Towards optimized care after bariatric surgery by physical activity and exercise intervention: a review

Most health care providers and experts in obesity and bariatric surgery now recognize the need for optimal care in follow-up after bariatric surgery. In practice, an adequate physical activity program is still lacking in most follow-up programs.

Obesity is a largely preventable chronic condition associated with several co-morbidities. Treatment options are lifestyle interventions in combination with pharmacotherapy (first option) and/or bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for durable weigh reduction in obese patients with a BMI > 40 or BMI > 35 with co-morbidities.
